Affluent individuals and families
Wealth preservation, tax efficiency, and generational continuity.
Private Advisory · By Referral
A private, independent advisory firm designing tailored insurance‑based structures for ultra‑high‑net‑worth families, family offices, and institutional clients.
What we do
We architect financial strategies.
As Risk Architects, we treat every insurance‑based structure as one component within a larger financial architecture — engineered to fit, not sold in isolation.
Designed for Complexity
Our work addresses the unique planning challenges faced by families and institutions managing substantial capital. Every engagement is tailored, highly confidential, and structured to align with long‑term financial, estate, and philanthropic objectives.
Selective by Design
Wealth preservation, tax efficiency, and generational continuity.
Specialized insurance architecture supporting integrated planning across complex family structures.
Advanced, compliant solutions designed for scale, governance, and long‑term capital objectives.
Charitable Acceleration structures supporting strategic, tax‑efficient charitable goals aligned with legacy planning.
Our Philosophy
We believe life insurance, when expertly designed, can serve as a powerful planning asset rather than a transactional product. Our approach emphasizes structure, integration, and long‑term resilience.
Every solution begins with a deep understanding of capital flows, tax exposure, estate objectives, and governance considerations — ensuring each design fits seamlessly within a broader planning framework.
Areas of Focus
Specific strategies are developed privately and implemented on a tailored basis.
Execution at scale requires underwriting expertise beyond the strategy itself. See how we approach it →
Strategic Frameworks
Frameworks are illustrative. Specific designs are developed privately, within the context of an engagement.
Legacy Investing is a framework for capital beyond what a family requires to sustain its lifestyle. Rather than holding this capital conservatively, the strategy directs it toward longer‑horizon, growth‑oriented allocation — paired with a death‑benefit‑oriented life insurance policy that serves as a structural hedge, funded either directly or through third‑party financing, depending on a family's circumstances.
In more advanced designs, the aspirational allocation is directed into Private Placement Life Insurance for continued tax‑free compounding — a two‑policy architecture, one policy providing the hedge, the second warehousing long‑term growth.
The governing principle throughout is "do no harm": pursue upside without placing existing capital at risk.
Private Placement Life Insurance can serve as an effective, tax‑efficient framework for families with wealth transfer goals spanning future generations of beneficiaries.
Structuring a policy requires disciplined evaluation — the investment managers and strategies available on a given carrier's platform, the source of funds available to support premiums, and the tax consequences associated with liquidating existing holdings to fund them. We design both Traditional and Catalyst PPLI structures around these considerations, not around a single carrier or platform.
Algorithmic premium financing allows a policy's funding obligations to be met through structured lending rather than direct outlay — preserving capital for other strategic use while maintaining the intended coverage and design. The approach is built on proprietary software, creating institutional level-analytics -back testing, stress testing, and interest-rate-sensitivity modeling — bringing a level of rigor to premium financing that has traditionally been evaluated far more manually.
Evaluating a financing arrangement requires careful attention to loan structure, collateral requirements, and lender terms. We work across multiple lending platforms and loan models, selecting the structure that best fits a family's balance sheet and risk tolerance — not a single lender's product.
The concept of utilizing discounted dollars to enhance financial planning goals is rooted in a simple strategy — utilizing a smaller amount of financial capital today to convert into a much larger amount of financial capital tomorrow.

Offered by LifeRisk Architects, a dba of LifeRisk Architects Insurance Services LLC
Institutional Partnership
Family offices, RIAs, US major banks, and trust companies are often asked to evaluate sophisticated insurance-based strategies on behalf of their ultra‑high‑net‑worth clients — questions that fall outside core investment management. LifeRisk Architects works alongside these institutions as an analytical resource, extending the same coordinated planning lens as FamilyOne to fit an institution's own review and delivery process.
Institutional Underwriting
At this scale, underwriting looks less like an application and more like a capital markets transaction. We treat it as institutional risk management: building an insurance portfolio that delivers the required capacity while optimizing pricing, carrier diversification, and long-term policy performance.
Engaging the global reinsurance market, rather than one underwriting opinion, is what makes outsized coverage possible.
Carriers, chief underwriters, medical directors, reinsurers, and actuaries, coordinated alongside the client's family office, counsel, and trustees.
Financial underwriting, business valuation, liquidity, net worth, and insurable interest can weigh as heavily as health.
Architecture designs the strategy. Underwriting engineers it into real protection and liquidity.
Why LifeRisk Architects
Ensure privacy, activity, and alignment with every client relationship.
Architecture driven by strategy — not product bias.
We work alongside estate and tax attorneys, CPAs, wealth strategists, financial advisors, RIAs, and family office teams.
Structures designed to perform across decades, not cycles.
The Practice
Founder & CEO
For more than 30 years, Jeffrey Reid has built his career at the center of the nation's most sophisticated life insurance planning — placing more than $100 billion of death benefit over a career that includes co-founding and leading The Producers Group, a national life insurance brokerage firm, as Managing Partner.
Jeff founded LifeRisk Architects to work directly with the ultra-high-net-worth client — alongside, not in place of, the wealth advisor, estate attorney, CPA, and family office already serving the family — across domestic and cross-border wealth planning.
His team specializes in estate and income tax mitigation, wealth transfer, multi-generational and charitable planning, Private Placement Life Insurance (PPLI) planning, Private Placement Variable Annuities (PPVA) planning, and Premium Financing, along with institutional underwriting and the design of diversified, multi-carrier portfolios for the largest and most complex cases.
Jeff earned his B.A. in International Relations from the University of Southern California. He lives with his wife, Yvonne, and their son, North — a third-generation Trojan who also works at LifeRisk Architects — in Del Mar, California.
Managing Partner, Underwriting & Portfolio Strategy
For more than two decades, Nick and Jeffrey Reid, Founder of LifeRisk Architects, have worked side by side, collaborating and executing advanced estate planning, tax mitigation, and legacy planning strategies.
“Risk comes from not knowing what you're doing.”— Warren Buffett
For more than twenty years, Nick Costello has operated at the point where large, complex insurance risk gets solved — not processed. He began his career at The Producers Group, a national life insurance brokerage firm, in 2004, rising to Senior Case Manager. He is widely respected throughout the industry for his work on large-scale capacity cases and impaired-risk underwriting involving challenging medical profiles, working intensely to find the medical and financial evidence that gives an underwriter genuine grounds to reconsider a risk classification — and structuring lines of coverage that achieve the best possible pricing and terms the case will bear.
Nick's specialty is architecture at scale. He has assembled portfolios of $300–500 million in coverage for individual high-net-worth clients, coordinating as many as twenty-five separate policies across multiple carriers to meet a single client's total need — engaging the reinsurance marketplace, rather than any one underwriting opinion, to reach capacity no single company could retain alone. It is a discipline that goes well past medical review: financial underwriting, business valuation, liquidity and net worth analysis, and insurable interest all factor into how a case of this size is built, priced, and placed. Few practitioners understand the reinsurance nuances and carrier appetites well enough to piece together lines of this magnitude — Nick is one of them.
He brings the same command to product selection — matching the competitive strengths of individual life insurance products, carrier by carrier, to the specific design and planning objective at hand — and to premium financing strategy, where structure and underwriting decisions carry equal weight.
For more than two decades, Nick and Jeffrey Reid, Founder of LifeRisk Architects, have worked side by side, collaborating and executing advanced estate planning, tax mitigation, and legacy planning strategies for some of the industry's most complex client situations. Nick advocates relentlessly for every client and advisor relationship, always in service of the best possible outcome. Nick holds a Bachelor of Arts from San Diego State University. He lives with his wife, Joanna, in Fallbrook, California.
Partner, Market Growth & Relationships
For decades, Ted Griffin has built enduring, trusted relationships with the banking, wealth management, and legal institutions that serve the nation's most affluent families — including a partnership of more than two decades with Jeffrey Reid, Founder of LifeRisk Architects, implementing estate and tax planning strategies for affluent families and businesses.
His practice centers on four planning disciplines — estate tax mitigation, income tax mitigation, risk management mitigation, and charitable acceleration — each built to preserve generational wealth and strengthen the assets under management his institutional partners hold on behalf of their clients.
Ted works directly with established banking and investment wealth management firms, as well as well-known estate and tax planning law firms, to deploy sophisticated asset preservation strategies that enhance client portfolios and deepen private client retention.
He is a former member of the NC State Banking Commission. He has been a speaker at various insurance and banking association conferences and has spoken at the Southern Federal Tax Institute.
His practice is built on relationships earned rather than credentials advertised — a reputation among the institutions he serves rather than a list of affiliations.
Ted holds a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MBA from Wake Forest University's Babcock School of Management.

Lionsmark Capital
Founder & CEO of Lionsmark Capital, which he established in 2016. The firm has developed an algorithmic approach to life insurance premium financing that brings institutional-level analytics — including backtesting, stress testing, and interest-rate-sensitivity modeling — to a strategy traditionally evaluated far more manually. Lionsmark has become one of the most recognized names in premium financing as a result. Darren and Jeffrey Reid, Founder of LifeRisk Architects, have collaborated on premium financing designs together for nearly a decade.
